Nearly 840,000 attend 2016 Balloon Fiesta

Attendance dipped at the 2016 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta compared to the previous year, but Fiesta officials say the number of this year’s visitors was better than the event’s five-year average.

Organizers announced Thursday afternoon the 45th annual Fiesta saw 839,309 visitors last month, a more than 116,000 drop from 2015. This year’s total did surpass the 817,899 average over the last five years.

The Fiesta brought in 550 registered balloon teams with 108 special shapes balloons. Balloons arrived from 19 countries, and 43 states were represented.

Most mornings during from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9 saw the green flag raised and balloons fly. The only day weather grounded balloons was Oct. 3. Also, officials called off Oct. 7 and Oct. 8 evening events because of weather.

The 46th annual Fiesta will take place Oct. 7-15, 2017. The theme will be “Inflate your Imagination.”
