ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- On Friday morning, pilots at nearly 70 schools across the Albuquerque metro unofficially kicked off the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta by participating in ABQ Aloft.

Kevin Stephenson was one of those pilots, and his visit to Bellehaven Elementary in northeast Albuquerque was a homecoming of sorts. Stephenson lives in Glendale, Arizona, but grew up in Albuquerque and attended school at Bellehaven.

"Aviation has been a big part of my life," he said. "Had it not been for balloons that landed at this school while I was a child, I may not have ever got involved in this sport. So it’s my way of giving back."

The event has become an annual opportunity for families, specifically kids, to see balloons up close and to ask pilots questions about inflation and flying.
