ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Balloon Fiesta Park is home to almost 100 major events per year, including the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. New benches bridging the museum and launch field will soon represent permanent memorials.

"It's a great area," said Susan Rice, spokesperson for the Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department. "Right now, it's very peaceful."

After this year's Balloon Fiesta, Rice said people will have the option to purchase memorial plaques which will go on these benches. About 20 will be installed in the area.

"Citizens have the opportunity if they want to dedicate this bench to a loved one who has passed away or a special event in their life," she said.

The Parks and Recreation Department says administrators have not yet determined a price for the plaques, but it should be announced in the coming weeks.

"This is not a fundraiser or anything like that for the park," Rice said. "We're just financing the benches and giving citizens an opportunity to have something special."
