ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Investigators are working to piece together a gruesome scene and a local family is hoping for a miracle in the aftermath of a carjacking that resulted in a crash early Saturday morning on the East Side.

Albuquerque police were pursuing a stolen vehicle taken from its owner at gunpoint when it ran a red light at Eubank and Menaul and hit another vehicle.

Family members of the couple in the other car say they were both ejected from it and later rushed to UNM Hospital. There, the man underwent surgery, according to the family, but doctors are having trouble stopping bleeding in his brain.

The family told KOB he is in bad condition, and are hopeful his girlfriend will pull through.

"I think, right away, for family members that may have lost a loved one," said John Sullivan, who played witness to the collision. "I think of kids, children, were there kids in the car. Accidents happen, but I'm sad to see it."

Meanwhile, police say none of the suspects received life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. They have been taken into custody, and their identities have yet to be released.
