ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A man known as "The Mechanic" is back behind bars. Daniel Ortiz has been arrested for the fifth time this year for his part in a string of vehicle thefts.

Authorities apprehended Ortiz Monday in a Pajarito Mesa location known to deputies as a compound for stolen vehicles. According to court records, it’s also a place they frequently run into Ortiz.

In early October, Ortiz was arrested at the compound off Douglas and Pajarito and charged with eight felony counts of receiving or transferring stolen vehicles. But he was released from jail, arrested from the same location Monday, and hit with the same charge again.

"There's a lot of it going on here and we probably don’t know half of it or see half of it," said one neighbor who didn’t want to give his name due to fear of retribution.

The neighbor said he had his truck stolen from in front of his house.

"They crashed through the gate it had a chain on it and they just smashed through it and took off,” he said.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said the area is a hot spot for stolen vehicles, and an area they continue to investigate. The District Attorney’s office said they’re not sure if Ortiz’s recent charge will be enough to keep him off the streets for good, something neighbors called frustrating.
