ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two men were arrested by Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies for allegedly driving while drunk late Friday night, resulting in a South Valley crash that sent at least one child to the hospital.

Court documents state both drivers failed field sobriety tests that were conducted by BCSO deputies. It was later determined by authorities that at least one of them, 24-year-old David Oropeza-Mota, had a blood alcohol content level of more than twice the legal limit.

Oropeza-Mota was also holding a 2-year-old child when deputies arrived on the scene; that child was in the vehicle with him at the time of the crash, deputies say.

He told deputies he was heading back to his house on Coors Boulevard near Blake Road in the South Valley at the time of the collision. Deputies say his eyes were “bloodshot” and that he had “thick speech.”

Oropeza-Mota is facing child abuse charges following the incident.

27-year-old Kenneth Lovato was also arrested by deputies, according to separate court documents, after he showed signs of intoxication. Deputies say a 7-year-old girl in Lovato's car had to be sent to UNM Hospital after suffering a "severe concussion."

Lovato is being charged with aggravated DWI following the incident.

It is unclear if the 2-year-old in Oropeza-Mota’s car was injured.
