Here is a proposed solution to gun violence some may have never heard before: garden tools.

Some Santa Fe residents are organizing a gun buyback event and will then have the guns melted and turned into shovels and rakes.

Kira Jones with the group New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence met some blacksmiths in Colorado who formed the organization Raw Tools. They forge the gun metal into tools that can create life.

Jones said this is not about taking away any responsible gun owner's right to carry.

“This is actually not an anti-gun campaign. This is a way to safely and responsibly get rid of unwanted guns, keeping them out of homes and off the streets,” Jones said. “Kids can't get ahold of them to commit suicide or to commit a crime or to accidentally kill one another.”

The first gun buyback will be in Santa Fe on Nov. 12.  They will hand out merchant gift cards in exchange for unwanted guns.  Anyone can turn in guns no questions asked, it's completely anonymous.

Someone from Raw Tools will be forging the guns into tools right in front of people at the event.  A location has not been announced yet.
