ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police say one man tried to work around the law in his attempt to cash a forged check.

Sean Stolz was arrested at the Walmart on Academy and Wyoming Sunday after, according to court documents, he tried to cash a forged check for $499.80.

According to police, Stolz told them he could only be charged with a misdemeanor because the amount of the check was less than $500.

He ended up getting arrested on felony charges anyway after police say they discovered the car he was driving was stolen.

Meanwhile, Stolz’s point about being 20 cents under the felony amount was moot; forgery of $2,500 or less is a fourth-degree felony.
