ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A memorial dedicated to a fallen Bernalillo County deputy was rededicated Saturday morning in Tijeras after receiving some touchups.

Deputy James McGrane Jr. was shot and killed by a wanted murderer suspect during a 2006 traffic stop. A cross marking the site on Highway 337 in Tijeras recently had to be removed because of road construction.

"I think you can't give enough credit for the people in government for working with the family and being sensitive to their needs, because obviously where it was originally at is very meaningful, but they understand that there is change and there is growth," said Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales.

Since McGrane's death over a decade ago, members of his family have dedicated themselves to the safety of local law enforcement, even holding an annual event that provides first responders with life-saving training.

Gonzales said the family's efforts are paying off.
