PLACITAS, N.M. -- New Mexico State Police say a 68-year-old woman died after being backed into and partially run over by a Sandoval County deputy Thursday as he was leaving a residence to respond to a call.

Deputies were investigating a burglary alarm at a residence on Trial Road West in Placitas when they received a call "for another residential alarm at a separate location," NMSP says.

As the deputy got into his vehicle to leave, the "rear area of his vehicle apparently struck the pedestrian, knocking her down." NMSP officers say Linda Baragiola was then "inadvertently" run over by the car's right rear tire.

Baragiola was taken to UNM Hospital for her injuries but later died.

NMSP officers say witnesses reported to them she was possibly talking on her cell phone when she was hit.
