LAS VEGAS (AP) - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the federal government is going to fast-track plans to build solar power generating facilities in six Western states.

Salazar says the government is setting aside 1,000 square miles of federal Bureau of Land Management property in Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico to determine where solar power stations should be built. Salazar made the announcement Monday in Las Vegas with Nevada Senator Harry Red..

Salazar and Reid call the 24 tracts of land to be studied Solar Energy Study Areas.

They say the goal is to speed the process of tapping the sun's energy to power homes, businesses and industries.
