NM gets $13 million to help with jobless benefits

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico is getting $13 million in federal stimulus money to pay jobless benefits and to administer its unemployment insurance program.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., announced the funding during a tour Tuesday of the Albuquerque Job Corps Center.

State officials said New Mexico was only one of five states that met the eligibility requirements for the funds due to the efforts of legislators and Gov. Bill Richardson to modernize New Mexico's unemployment system.

Richardson said the state will use the funds to continue improving the unemployment system and ensuring that jobless New Mexicans are getting the relief they need.
