Census: Dona Ana County sees continued growth

Las Cruces continues to grow according to latest census numbers

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The U.S. Census Bureau says Las Cruces and Dona Ana County continue to experience steady population growth.

According to the most recent population estimates, Las Cruces is inching closer to a population of 92,000 while Dona Ana County now has more than 201,000 residents.

The most recent census report is based on population estimates from July 1, 2008.

The Census Bureau estimates are based on the number of building permits and mobile home shipments that have been reported within cities and counties.

Elsewhere, the Census Bureau says the number of people living in Grant County is falling because of a downturn in the mining industry.

Grant County's population has fallen 3.7 percent from what it was during the last census taken in 2000.
