SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Seven nonprofit arts organizations in New Mexico have been awarded grants totaling $300,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Gov. Bill Richardson said the groups can use the grants to help preserve jobs threatened by declines in philanthropic activity and for other needed support.

Richardson said the arts are important to economic recovery in New Mexico because they are a major tourism driver.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation, the Santa Fe Art Institute and the Santa Fe Opera will each receive $50,000.

Santa Fe’s Fine Arts for Children and Teens, Inc., Santa Fe New Music, Inc. and Albuquerque’s Working Classroom, Inc. will also receive grants.
