Carjackers abduct woman to Arizona

Jean Johnson

A quick trip to the supermarket Sunday turned into a frightening, life-changing experience for a Gallup woman.

Jean Johnson had just left the Gallup Lowe's after picking up some eggs for her family's breakfast. Walking to her car, Johnson suddenly felt a nudge.

"The guy was right there and had a gun pointed against my rib and said, 'Get in the car,'" she said.

Johnson was being carjacked and kidnapped.

"I was shaking like a leaf and my heart was pounding at first. And I told him, 'I think I'm having a heart attack.' and he didn't say anything," Johnson said.

A woman drove Johnson's car while the gun-wielding man sat in the front passenger seat. The three were heading for Arizona.

The man told Johnson if she was quiet, he wouldn't hurt her and would drop her off somewhere safe. All Johnson could do was keep faith.

"I was saying 1,500 Hail Marys, praying," she said.

Just outside of Winslow, Ariz., the man kept his promise and let Johnson go.

But she wouldn't let the perpetrators get away with her car. Johnson used OnStar to track down the vehicle.

Police caught up with the suspects in Flagstaff. There was a short chase and the two ended up running from the car.

As police tried to negotiate with the suspects, they say the man shot the woman and then killed himself.

Johnson is glad to be home with her nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. But she remains shaken by the whole episode and the deaths of her alleged abductors.

"It's very upsetting, very tragic," she said.

Authorities identify the male suspect as 32-year-old Allen Powers of Kansas. He was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

The woman, who hasn't been identified, is in critical condition at a Flagstaff hospital.
