He is Robert Kret, who is the director of the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tenn.
He will start his new job at the Santa Fe museum on Oct. 26.
Kret succeeds George King, who left the O'Keeffe last month after 11 years to head the New York-based American Federation of Arts.
Kret has been at the Chattanooga museum for nine years, during which time he oversaw its expansion and renovation.
He also was director at the Miami University Art Museum in Oxford, Ohio, and at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wis.
