ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Department of Homeland Security on Friday showed off new technology aimed at keeping cargo safe until it gets to its destination.
The shipping industry was worried about people stealing cargo, but Homeland Security officials realized that if someone could take something out of a shipping container, someone also could put something in.
The dual concerns spurred the program aimed at improving the security of tens of thousands of containers of cargo moving around the world every day.
The technology is being tested at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque.
A Homeland Security official, Ken Concepcion, says testing will be finished by the end of next year.
Concepcion says industry could be using the technology by around 2012.
