ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The latest delivery at the Rio Grande Zoo is a little one who isn't so little. Director Rick Janser says a 318-pound female elephant calf has been born.

She is the offspring of Rozie, a 16-year-old Asian elephant who was the first elephant born at the Albuquerque zoo.

The baby born Wednesday is the second. Mother and calf are doing well but Janser says both will remain out of public view for a while to allow them to strengthen their bonds.

Rozie received extensive prenatal care, regular examinations and frequent ultrasounds to monitor the health of elephant and calf during the 22-month gestation. The zoo's Asian elephant herd now has six animals.
