Old Man Gloom burns in Santa Fe

Zozobra, the puppet emblem of all the ills of the previous year, went up in flames tonight in Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe shortly after dark.
The burning of Zozobra marks the opening of the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe.
According to lore, when Zozobra, or Old Man Gloom, is lit on fire amid music and dancing, it’s demise carries with it all of the bad things that have happened in the previous year.
