Thousands of New Mexicans are remembering the day eight years ago when four airliners crashed into three public buildings and a field in the largest terror attack on the United States in the country’s history.

In the Albuquerque area, 2,998 flags were placed in Vista Verde Memorial Park in Rio Rancho – one flag for each person killed when the twin World Trade Center towers collapsed.

In Albuquerque, a group of off duty firefighters continued a memorial begun in 2003 – the second anniversary of the attacks – when they meet at the fire academy and board spare fire trucks.

At precisely 9:08, the exact time the first plane struck one of the twin towers, the firefighters were dispatched to the Bank of Albuquerque building in Downtown and climbed the 22 story building five times in 35 pounds worth of gear.

“That is 110 stories,” says Melissa Romero of AFD. “The same height as the twin towers.”

At the University of New Mexico, the school’s College Republicans will place a flag for each of the 9/11 victims across the north lawn of the Duck Pond.

At noon, Mayor Martin Chavez and members of the City Council commemorated 9/11 with a ceremony on Civic Plaza where the U.S. Naval Academy Band performed.

In Santa Fe, first responders will participate in a memorial parade honoring the first reponders who died responding to the attacks.  The 1:00 parade will travel south on Bishop's Lodge Road/Washington Avenue to Palace, Palace to Cathedral Place, Cathedral Place to East San Francisco and then west on Old Santa Fe Trail to the state capitol.

And this evening, a 7:00 special day of remembrance and candlelight vigil at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at Eighth and Bridge will be the end point for a community procession through Barelas.  The procession will be headed by city and county firefighters and will begin at Sacred Heart Church.
