Chicago-based Siemens Corp. delivered a cyclotron for radioactive isotope production to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center Tuesday morning.

The isotopes are key components of some cancer diagnostics tests. The cancer center will also produce isotopes for use in cancer research.

Siemens Medical Solutions selected the UNM Cancer Center because of the quality of research and care being done there.

“The University of New Mexico is a world renowned location of research,” said Siemens Vice President Mark Lusser.

Lusser adds that the proximity to Sandia National Laboratories gives Siemens the opportunity to “develop new approaches to cancer management to better treat and better diagnose the disease in the future.”

Siemens intends to open a separate isotope production facility in Albuquerque in coming years for the regional market.

The cost of the cyclotron was paid through public and private financing.
