SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - The recent National Scenic Byways conference has honored New Mexico's Trail of the Mountain Spirits with its 2009 Award for Visitor Experience.

The trail is located in and around the Gila and Aldo Leopold wilderness areas near Silver City.

It's become an outdoor classroom for the Byway Kids Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument's 100th anniversary photography program.

Area students took photos during field trips to the monument, and their work was displayed across the region.

The trail includes the Mogollon, Tularosa, Diablo, Big Burro, San Francisco, Mangas and Black Range mountains, the Apache Creek Archaeological Interpretive Site, the Catwalk and the Very Large Array, Aldo Leopold Vista, Emery Pass Vista and the Fort Bayard national recreation trails.
