With one year left in office, Governor Bill Richardson will make one last push for a piece of legislation that eluded him earlier this year.

He'll try to win domestic partnership rights for all couples-- including same sex couples-- across New Mexico.

It's something the governor wants to see done before he leaves office.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, he'll introduce the bill when the legislature meets in January.

This time around, advocates are getting a head start and working with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe to try to keep opposition from Roman Catholic bishops at bay.

Some believe it was their opposition that doomed the domestic partnership bill in the state senate this year.

If the bill were passed, all unmarried couples, including same-sex couples, could sign contracts establishing the same rights that married couples have under state law.
