Traffic was reported to be backed up as far as the Big-I.
Cares were lined up bumper-to-bumper, and some people reported sitting in traffic for up to three hours to get to the park.
The backup was reported as far south as the Big-I.
Fiesta officials say an accident at Tramway was a big part of the problem, and the congestion lingered even after the accident was cleared up.
Visitor Bill Jacobson said Saturday, "Well I've seen worse years, but, yeah it's pretty slow. It's taken us about 40 minutes to come from just over here at the casino."
Fiesta-goer Cheryl Leis took an optimistic approach, "It has been horrible but you know its worth it all, the balloons are already up, you've got something to look at."
APD says they had a lot of manpower on the streets on Saturday morning.
APD Spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said, "We just want you to get there safely, but we also need you to do us a favor and leave a little earlier from your house."
The department says to ensure you're on the field in time for the mass ascension, you need to be on the road by 4:30 a.m.
