Rain grounded Wednesday's events at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, but vendors at the annual event viewed their change of fortune philosophically.

“We’ve been here for 24 years, so you just roll with the punches,” said one vendor. "Some days it’s good, some days it’s bad. You can’t do anything about the weather.”

A spokeswoman for the fiesta, Kathie Leyendecker, said rain started falling on the field a little before 6 a.m., and the decision to cancel flying events was made at the 6:15 a.m. pilots' briefing. But she says the weather is looking good for Thursday and great for the weekend.

“We’re feeling like we’re going to have a healthy, happy fiesta because the weather conditions from tomorrow (Thursday) through Sunday are looking really good,” said Leyendecker.

Cindy Miller, a spectator caught in the rain Wednesday, said she’s not discouraged: “The weather is gonna clear and we’ll be back later in the week to see what’s going on and we’ll see something.”

Wednesday's events were to feature the Flight of the Nations, in which balloons from foreign countries would be the first to lift off from the field on Albuquerque's north side.

Mass ascensions of hot air balloons are slated both Saturday and Sunday mornings.
