LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces man has been sworn in as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs.

Edward Avalos took the oath of office last week.  The 57-year-old Avalos started his new job Monday in Washington, D.C.

Avalos is one of seven undersecretaries in the department.  He will oversee the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Agricultural Marketing Service and the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration.

Avalos has been involved in agriculture throughout his life.  He grew up on farm west of Las Cruces, where the crops included cotton, alfalfa, sorghum, chile and onions.
