ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Federal scientists and environmentalists are embarking on a study to determine what pollutants are in the Rio Grande and the channels that carry irrigation water throughout central New Mexico.
Scientists say what they find could ultimately impact decisions on drinking water, wastewater treatment and wildlife.
The study is funded through the Middle Rio Grande Bosque Initiative.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with Amigos Bravos and high school students to sample water from the channels that run along the river. They are looking for everything from bacteria to pharmaceuticals.
Fish and Wildlife Service hydrologist Cyndie Abeyta says pharmaceuticals have been found in low concentrations and it's important that scientists do what they can to preserve water quality.
