SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Legislature's special session picked up some momentum late on Day 5, with the Senate preparing to vote on a deficit reduction package.
Lawmakers faced with plugging a $650 million hole in this year's state budget have spent much of the week behind closed doors, trying to come up with a plan that would suit both houses of the Legislature and Gov. Bill Richardson.
Majority Leader Michael Sanchez said he expected the Senate to act on a package of cuts and fund transfers late Wednesday.
The Belen Democrat raised the possibility that lawmakers could be headed home as early as Thursday. But any bills passed by the Senate would first have to go to the House for its approval.
