MORA, N.M. (AP) - The state auditor has determined the Mora school district didn't follow procedures in spending thousands of dollars in public funds on leather jackets, snacks and dinners for area state lawmakers and other officials.

State Auditor Hector Balderas says school officials improperly diverted $64,000 in funds to a discretionary account. The audit issued Tuesday says the district may have violated the state constitution, which bars public money from going toward private causes.

The audit found that six of the eight purchase orders involving the legislators were never signed off on by Mora Superintendent Dora Romero. It was Romero who asked Balderas to investigate earlier this year.

Balderas says he is referring the matter to state and federal investigators.
