Westbound lanes of I-40 were closed for several hours Friday.
Westbound Interstate 40 has re-opened after being closed and restricted for most of the afternoon at the Carnuel exit east of Albuquerque after a fatal rollover involving a semi truck. Eastbound lanes are unaffected.
Bernalillo County sheriff's officers say the driver of the semi was headed westbound on I-40 near mile marker 168 around 12:30 this afternoon, when the truck veered off the road and into a mountain.
Deputies say the driver is 61-year-old Charles Wayne Scalf, who is from out of state. They believe he was going to California.
Rescue crews were unable to get into the cab of the truck, but have been able to get close enough to confirm the driver is deceased.
Haz-mat crews are assisting to clean diesel fuel which spilled as a result of the crash.
It is unclear what caused the driver to stray off the interstate, but alcohol was not a factor.
