Officials from the federal Census Bureau were in Albuquerque Monday to urge local businesses to get the word out to participate in the census.

Federal money is doled out to localities based on population and the census is how feds determine how many people live in a community.

“It’s very crucial, it’s very important because if you don’t participate in the census you will be denying your community funds for the next 10 years,” said Veronica Reyes of the Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau is beginning to hang posters at various places urging people to fill out their 10-question census form.

Currently, census workers are verifying addresses and working on a grassroots campaign reaching out to the homeless community, minorities and people living in rural areas.

The deadline for submitting your survey is April 1.
