Principal Rodney Litke shows the damage left by vandals

Vandals hit Taos High School this weekend, using a bicycle to cause tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to a new track.

From the imprints left on the foam rubber, it appears the vandals rode around and stepped all over the track. They also wrote cusswords with a white spray.

The principal of Taos High School, Rodney Litke, says the cost of the damage could reach $25,000.

"It's very frustrating when you try to do something of this magnitude for the students and the community and then someone from the community tears it up," he said.

The damage sets back the finishing touches on Taos' $2.7 million track and field.

Because the weather is starting to turn, it is unclear how long it will take to finish the project. Right now, the district is trying to figure out if the damage could be covered by the contractor's insurance.

Meanwhile, the principal is asking for anyone with information about the vandalism to call Taos police.
