AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - The Aztec school board has accepted the resignation of superintendent Linda Paul, who is leaving to serve as executive director of the upstart New Mexico Leadership Institute. Her resignation is effective Nov. 4.

Paul calls it a difficult decision. She has been with the Aztec schools since 1996 and has been superintendent for the past eight years.

The board appointed Kirk Carpenter, a 20-year employee of the district, as the new superintendent.

The state Legislature established the New Mexico Leadership Institute last year with the goal of recruiting, preparing and supporting school administrators.

Paul will work with principals, superintendents, higher education administrators and leadership associations to improve the quality and quantity of school leaders.
