Winter weather sweeping through state

The first winter storm of the season began making its way into New Mexico from the west overnight and is now sweeping through northern and central New Mexico and will continue through this evening.

A New Mexico State Police dispatcher reported that the Gallup and Grants area received one to four inches of snow overnight. Snow was falling in the Four Corners area and in Santa Fe.

The National Weather Service reported at noon that 10 inches of snow had fallen south of Gallup, six inches at Sandia Park and five inches at Gallup, Farmingon and Tijeras in the previous 12 hours.

Eastbound Interstate 40 was closed down for much of Wednesday morning as eight semis were involved in an accident near Thoreau.  State police attribute the accident to one trucker traveling too fast for road conditions.

A winter storm warning is in effect for north central New Mexico through 6:00 Thursday morning while a winter storm advisory has been issued for the northwestern and west central parts of the state.

In the southern part of the state, a wind advisory is in effect from the bootheel stretching eastward through Otero County and northward to Torrance County. Winds are forecast to be 25 to 35 miles an hour with gusts of 45 to 50.
