UNM quarterback Donovan Porterie has been approved by the Mountain West Conference for a sixth year of eligibility. Now Porterie is waiting for clearance from the NCAA for a medical redshirt year. Porterie says, “I feel good about my chances of getting that sixth year.” Porterie is a four year starter but played less than 12 quarters in an injury plagued 2008 season before suffering a season-ending torn ACL and MCL in his right knee.
UNM is in the process of putting together his appeal to the NCAA. The Mountain West approved a hardship year IF he has additional eligibility. Right now, he's a fifth-year senior and he would need to get that sixth-year of eligibility from the NCAA in order to replace the 2008 season.
In other UNM football news: According to the Washington Post, Mike Locksley offered a scholarship to Potomac (Md.) defensive back Devonta Tabannah. "I talked to [New Mexico Coach Mike] Locksley and then he talked to Tabannah," Potomac Coach Chris Davidson said. "That's a real good offer. Now he has Akron and New Mexico as [division I-A] offers. I expect this will drum up other offers from other people."|
