Sidewalks were icy and temperatures frigid in Raton Thursday morning
A potent storm system generated snow showers over much of northern and central New Mexico overnight Wednesday but had largely left New Mexico by noon Thursday.

Temperatures varied early Thursday morning from the teens to the 20s in the mountains. Some residents of the northern New Mexico community of Raton said they’re used to snow this time of year, but not the frigid temperatures.

“The freezing temperatures are a little bit different,” said Raton resident Marcia Hefker. “We usually don’t have temperatures this cold.”

“The wind is just what makes it really cold,” observed fellow Raton resident Alfred Tafoya. “Otherwise, yesterday was beautiful. The snow was just falling straight down. Today is different.”

The National Weather Service says snow and rain showers will gradually diminish across western and southern parts of the state today.
