In the first study of its kind, researchers with the CDC asked nearly 4,000 people in every state how many times they got a decent night's rest over the past month.
One in 10 New Mexicans said not once, while 33% in the state said they slept well every single night.
Studies have shown stress, odd work hours, and health problems like obesity can all keep us up at night.
There are plenty of other reasons, too.
Kristina Dougharty said, "It's depending on the weather, really. If it's too warm, it's hard to fall asleep. If it's too cold, it is too. You just don't get a balance easily."
While health problems can cause sleeplessness, researchers say staying up can also lead to more health concerns like heart disease.
One good sleeper says that seems to make sense.
"I guess I'm an example of a person who gets lots of sleep, and my weight is exactly where it needs to be, and uh, I feel really good every day," Rob Rispoli said.
The state with the worst sleep habits is West Virginia, where nearly one of five people reports they rarely sleep well.
The fewest sleeping problems were reported in North Dakota.
