Valencia County deputies deputies will now spend their entire shifts in a high-crime area known for its burglaries.
At one point recently, deputies reported receiving 25 to 30 reports of burglaries each shift and they’re expecting things will get worse.
“Our burglaries are on the rise and we’re forecasting the burglaries to increase, especially with the holidays coming up,” said Deputy Chris Trujillo.
Three deputies have been taken out of routine field patrols and will spend their entire shifts in the communities of El Cerro Mission, Meadowlake, Rio Communities, Tierra Grande, Jarales and the highland Meadows areas.
“I think it’s about time,” said area resident Rick Wilson. “I think police officers need to worry less about traffic and speeders and they need to worry about people breaking into houses and the lawlessness that they won’t let us self defend.”
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office says the new initiative will not create a void in routine patrols because the department has recently hired new deputies who can perform those tasks.
