ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - University of New Mexico administrators are trying to come clean on issues surrounding a Sept. 20 altercation involving football coach Mike Locksley.
They have been criticized for the university's investigation into claims by an assistant coach that Locksley choked and punched him.
University president David Schmidly admitted Wednesday that UNM "bungled" the affair. He apologized and asked for the community's forgiveness.
Schmidly says open records policies were not followed in handling media requests for information about the investigation.
Schmidly also disclosed that an attorney for receivers coach J.B. Gerald sent a letter to UNM offering continued media silence in exchange for a $500,000 settlement. Schmidly says the offer was rejected.
