A suspected drunk driver plowed into a Valencia County deputy's patrol unit Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as a deputy was walking back to his patrol unit during a traffic stop on Interstate 25 near Los Lunas.

Sheriff Rene Rivera said an approaching pickup tried to change lanes, hitting a second truck, which hit the patrol unit.

The unit then hit the deputy, who was trying to run to the shoulder, knocking him down.

The sheriff says the first truck kept going despite losing a front tire, exiting onto Highway 6, where it hit several other cars before getting pulled over.

Rivera says his deputy was shaken up, but will be OK.
