Controlled burns started in northern New Mexico

Two controlled burns ignited by Santa Fe National Forest crews on Thursday are liable to be visible in northern New Mexico for the next few days.

The Chaparral Rx Burn was ignited about 9 miles northwest of Jemez Springs and could be visible from Seven Springs, the Jemez corridor and Highway 550 into Cuba.

The Begoso Rx Burn is 14 miles southeast of Pecos and west of Punta de San Jose. It could be visible from the communities of Rowe, Pecos. Glorieta, Ilfeld, San Juan, San Jose, San Isidro and the I-25 corridor.

Both fires are designed to improve the health of the forests and wildlife habitat.
