Construction continues Wednesday on the La Luz de Amistad Park on Tramway

A long-delayed and controversial landscaping project on Albuquerque's east side is starting to come together, thanks in part to the mayor-elect.

La Luz de Amistad Park at Tramway and Central was once overrun with homeless people and prairie dogs, neighbors say. But the area is getting a makeover and Councilor Don Harris says people will be proud of it when it's done.

"I think it's going to improve how people feel about this area," he said.

The park, which leaders characterize as a beautification project, sits right off Interstate 40. Because of that, construction was delayed for several months as the city got state and federal approval.

Mayor-elect Richard Berry helped secure the state's portion of the funding when he was a representative. The $1.4 million cost for the landscaping is being shared by the city and the state.

Harris says because of the recession, the city was able to get better bids. The councilor says he is working to get extra police patrols in the area to keep homeless people out.
