A serious accident Wednesday night that resulted in two fatalities closed westbound Interstate 40 near Carnuel, just east of Albuquerque, for about four hours.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputies say the head-on collision in the westbound lanes occurred Wednesday night after 58-year-old Katherine Cullen from Santa Fe struck 56-year-old Judith Bjorkman of Edgewood head-on.

Both drivers died on scene. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor.

Deputies say Bjorkman's two-year-old grandchild was flown to an area hospital after the impact. That child has already been released.

The Interstate re-opened around midnight, officials said.
