SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Officials with the New Mexico Rail Runner say nearly 850 people took advantage of the first-ever train service between Albuquerque and Santa Fe on the day after Thanksgiving.

That total more than doubled the Black Friday ridership for the previous two years on Rail Runner Express trains.

The trains had operated only within the Albuquerque area until service was extended to Santa Fe last December.

Augusta Meyers of the Mid-Region Council of Governments, which operates the Rail Runner, says most of Friday's riders began their trips in the Albuquerque area.

Operators offered two round-trip trains after retail and tourism leaders complained about an earlier plan to cancel service on the day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the holiday season.
