Block admits to prescription drug addiction

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. says he fighting an addiction to prescription drugs but plans to remain in the regulatory job despite calls for his resignation over allegations of misuse of taxpayer money.

Block disclosed the addiction after a Tuesday meeting of the Public Regulation Commission.

Block said he is getting treatment but "it's a daily battle." He declined to provide other details of his addiction. Block is under investigation for possible abuse of a state-issued gasoline card and the state Court of Appeals has reinstated charges against him for misuse of campaign money from his 2008 race.

State Democratic Party chairman Javier Gonzales, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and PRC members have called for his resignation.
