An Albuquerque man who could die without electricity now has his power back on Friday thanks to our 4 On Your Side team.
PNM cut power to the Munoz family home recently after the family didn’t pay their bill.
Andrew Munoz is recovering from Hodgkin’s disease and has a brain illness that gives him seizures if he gets too hot. He needs oxygen to recover from the seizures, but he can’t get that if he doesn’t have electricity.
New Mexico has an indigent law in place that restricts utility companies from turning off service if doing so would cause death or injury in the household. The law requires doctors to fill out a medical certification form every 90 days and customers are required to submit proof of financial need.
PNM told the Munoz family their form wasn't filled out correctly, so they cut power to the house.
PNM said the household owed more than $2,000.
But after KOB’s 4 On Your Side made calls to PNM, a PNM customer service representative called to tell the family they would turn their power back on.
PNM told KOB they don't want someone in need to go without power and they wanted to do the right thing.
