The San Juan County Detention Center has released shocking video of an inmate using a handmade shank to try and stab a jail guard.

“He comes out of the cell and bypasses two other guards to get to the other guard,” said the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Bruce Current.

Phillip Trujillo, 31, is the inmate in the video.

“Well, Phillip Trujillo was in jail on a probation violation and the guards really don't know what happened or what set him off,” said Current.

Trujillo’s weapon was handmade.

“It was a toilet bowl cleaner. It was sharpened,” said Current.

Thursday in court Trujillo’s charges were changed from aggravated battery with a deadly weapon to attempted murder and bound over to district court.

Officials said this isn’t Trujillo’s first altercation with guards inside the detention center.

“Four other previous felonies that were violent felonies from battery on a police officer or a P.O. in the jail,” said Current.

The shank tore through the guard’s shirt, but someone pulled Trujillo off the guard before the attack could turn deadly.

“They were able to get the shank away from him before it actually penetrated the officer,” said Current.

Officers said more battery charges are expected against Trujillo.
