The city of Albuquerque says its Illegal Firework Hotline received over 850 calls between July 3 and 4, down from 945 calls received in 2011.

According to the city, illegal fireworks resulted in the creation of 649 incidents, resulting in more than 16 criminal citations being issued for using aerial fireworks and firecrackers.

The number of criminal citations is expected to increase as more inspectors submit end of shift reports.

The Fire Marshal’s office confiscated approximately 100 pounds of illegal fireworks during enforcement operations.

AFD had 65 emergency response and enforcement units providing emergency services, patrolling neighborhoods and Bosque, and standing by large public fireworks events.

“I want to thank the citizens for being civic minded and doing their part in helping us protect our great city from the threat of fire," said Fire Chief James Breen.
