An Albuquerque native is going for gold.

But as they say, behind every great man is a great woman.

In Jarrin Solomon’s case, it’s his mom.

"He deserves this and he deserves to be there," said Susie Solomon in her Northeast Heights home.

Susie is one proud mom. She’s been a busy one too.

Susie still remembers all the sports her son, Jarrin, wanted to try out as a kid.

"He started soccer when he was five," she said. “He was a gymnast actually, he won some regional awards for gymnastics. He was in ice hockey, basketball. He's an all around athlete."

Well, that natural athletic talent is taking him, and mom, to the pinnacle of the sports world.

"I would just like to see his smile with a medal," said Susie.

Jarrin is heading to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

"It's going to be a good experience. It's kind of cool to be in that elite club now," said Jarrin Solomon.

The 26-year-old will compete in the 4x400m relay. He’ll represent Trinidad and Tobago. That’s because his dad, Mike, a two-time Olympian himself, is from the Caribbean country.

Solomon may be representing Trinidad and Tobago but he is a true New Mexican; first competing for La Cueva High School then going on to become a Lobo. "He's from Albuquerque, he was born here and raised here," said Susie.

"I think he also represents Albuquerque out there, not just Trinidad."

When asked what advice she’d give parents on encouraging their kids, she says:

“Just support them in whatever athletic thing they want to do and try to do an all around thing. I tried to expose Jarrin to all the sports to see what he would excel at."

A mother’s life-long support, that’s as good as gold.

Jarrin will compete in the first round of the 4x400m relay on August 9th on NBC. The final round will be August 10th.
