The state of New Mexico announced Tuesday that human error caused more than 7,700 employees to either miss a June paycheck or get an incorrect amount of pay.

The state also said payroll employees weren’t properly trained and staffing levels weren’t appropriate to effectively get the state payroll out.

"In this case it was human error, essentially one box was not checked and that basically created a series of errors from then on and in trying to correct those, there were additional errors that were made," said Ricky Bejarano, director for the state controller of the Department of Finance and Administration.

The state has contracted outside help to train payroll employees and monitor pay for the next six months.

The cost to the state for the outside contractor will be about $200,000.
